The Little Felt Penguin sewing pattern & instructions is based on the largest and heaviest of all penguins on earth, the Emperor Penguin. In real life, both female and male emperor penguins can reach heights of between 110–120 cm (43–47 in), which is close to the average height of a 6-year-old (human) child! The Little Felt Penguin, on the other hand, is approximately 12 cm (4 3/4″) tall. In other words, it is a small felt creature, but with an imperial look!
Another noteworthy characteristic of the emperor penguin is their huddling behavior. Male penguins gather together in groups for a couple of months while incubating eggs on top of their feet. I had always wondered how they could survive in the extreme cold of Antarctica while standing still for weeks on end (without eating, as well!). As it turns out, they do move around, but very slowly, to switch positions within their huddle. This is so that each penguin can spend about an equal amount of time in different parts of the huddle to keep warm. Amazing, isn’t it?
But of course, there are many other types of penguins besides the emperor penguin, and you are more than welcome to make modifications to the pattern to create a different one. For example, if you prefer to make a king penguin, you do not have to make big changes because adult emperor penguins and king penguins look very similar. Or, if you’d rather make a more generic or more iconic penguin, you can use orange felt for its beak and feet and omit the orange and yellow patches on its face.
Regardless of the type of penguin you choose to make, it is sure to bring a smile to your face with its cute round body and short legs!
